What Is Decriminalization?

Decriminalization of entheogenic plants and fungi refers to the reduction or elimination of related criminal penalties.

  • Entheogen: a substance that causes one to become inspired or to experience feelings of inspiration, often religious or spiritual manner. The word literally means “creating the divine withing.”
  • Elimination of Criminal Penalties: Eliminates funds or resources relating to detention, arrest, or prosecution for the posession, cultivation, and sharing of entheogenic plants and fungi.

What About Legalization?

While true legalization is a lofty ideal, “Legalization” in practice often comes with conditions. These conditions create economic pressures through regulations that encourage corporate economic exploitation. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Limits on naturally occurring entheogenic plants and fungi. Limits are just another way of saying, “When can we start arresting people?” – this is not true decriminalization. Limits can include:
    • Limits on quantity
    • Expensive/prohibitive licensing requirements
    • Requiring medical diagnoses prior to consuming entheogens

These conditions are exclusionary and limit the accessibility of plant medicines.

Why Decriminalization?

  • Decriminalization is about inclusivity, not exclusivity.
  • Decrim Nature operates on a Grow, Gather, Gift model
    • Grow: You should be able to grow plants and mushrooms freely without government or corporate influence or limitation
    • Gather: You should be able to sustainably gather entheogens from the ground and gather together in community
    • Gift: You should be able to share Mother Nature’s entheogenic gifts with others
